At St. Boniface Elementary School in Elgin, Mrs. Starman’s third-grade science class has been studying the food chain. To better understand how food moves through the chain, students dissected owl pellets (which are the parts of the food the owl does not digest, compacts and spits back out).
They also had the opportunity dissect an owl pellet virtually and to identify skeletal systems found within. St. Boniface students are performing this work on a Zspace computer, which the school has on loan. This computer allows students to see and manipulate 3-D images using special glasses and software, giving them a realistic view of what they are discovering.
